I really would like to know how that big rod is connected to the shock.. i would think the shock would have a tendency to just push up away from the downtube, unless there is a hidden link or something

Yeah, man! I wish I could do that. I built myself a little stand recently, and I'm at a measly 10", but I should be getting better soon. I'm waiting on new pedals, and then I'll really be confident enough to go higher.
